There is no single human experience that can be sufficient no matter how long or detailed they can or have captured the entirety of a subject. The controversy of the anointing prevailing over skill or skill being more important over anointing in music has long been a never-ending debate till this very moment. Why anointing will not supersede skill in music!

The skilled school of thought believes that God deserves the best, hence they must be creative and innovate new possibilities that express His unique nature – So, let’s get the best choral and music arrangements, musicians, and singers as well as promoting excellence at the highest levels. Only that very many times, they go overboard. Only that very many times, they go overboard.

While the anointing ambassadors are of the opinion that no matter how skilful, well organized, and nice your music or song is presented, if you haven’t got the anointing, you are just like a noisy gong – after all according to some, with the anointing, going offbeat, flat or hitting the wrong notes won’t matter so much, as long as the “spirit” moves – really!

It’s of no use staying or going both extremes of the spectrum – being spirit-filled without the required skill will not produce any result. Likewise, possessing the best of skills without the anointing will not minister or bless the congregation at best, you are only performing.

In other words, anointing without skill is mediocrity while skills without the anointing is entertainment or a show.

Firstly, I should establish it here that music was created by God and is still God’s original idea even till this very day: Deuteronomy 31:19, John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made – which includes music!

Eph 5:9 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.

God commanded skill acquisition in the music ministry psalm 33:3 sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. Also, in 1 Chronicle musical skill was a large factor in placing Chenaniah as the choir leader by David whom the bible referred to as a man of an excellent spirit.

Skill enables the spirit of God to be more effective in its delivery. 1 Corinthians 3:191 Chronicle 25:7 their number who were trained in singing to the Lord, with their relatives, all who were skillful, was 288.

In other not to continually operate in the mediocrity of ‘God will help us syndrome’ in the music ministry or when singing, there should not be a substitute for the anointing for skill or skill for anointing. It is also important to understand the gift of anointing and skill.

It is amazing that not many know that when you have the spirit of God in you as a singer or musician, you are already anointed. How did I know this? In 1 john 2:27 “and as for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you, but as his anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in him.” However, you can grow and sustain the anointing in you.

1 Corinthians 3:19 there is no amount of human intellect or skills sufficient to accomplish the work of God effectively. It is not by power nor by might or abilities of our own, but by the spirit of God, that we will live fruitful lives in the lord’s service on this earth.

The anointing for skills recorded in the bible is the impartation of the spirit of God into a man causing that person to be able to do operate either with a higher degree of wisdom, skill, knowledge, or operate unusually, supernaturally by the ability of God within him.

The intent of the anointing is to set apart a person, people, place, etc. for divine use. And as Christians, we have been set apart. Hebrew 3:1 tells us this. It now behooves on us to seek a deeper level of anointing from God to create tremendous results. God used ordinary men in the bible for great works. He empowered them using their skills, intellect, ability, etc.

Have you ever asked yourself a question on why God chose David or Saul turned Paul and other great men in the bible? The anointing will not come on anything shoddy or less than “standard” except it’s been set apart for use. This is also a reason why if God has to convert a man from a lost path, He will for His use.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. Here, there is an emphasis on doing it well – efficiently and skilfully! This is why the spirit of God empowers an individual (both ordinary and talented persons). God will always equip who He has called. He is a God of excellence, process, and order.

So, why is it that we often do not experience this frequently during worship, choir ministering, musicians playing, etc. as we SHOULD, even as possessing the anointing in us? This is very simple – we do not place a demand on it and there is no UNITY!

In my previous post (Reasons you may be the problem of your choir), I explained some of the factors that hinder the power of and anointing of God and His movement amongst choristers and choirs.

Please note that the word “anointing” can be viewed from different perspectives. The bible talks about the anointing being used to set apart 2 Kings 9:6 , Protect 1 Chronicle 16:21-22 , etc. But the anointing referred to in this post is that which empowers us to cause tremendous result when we minister or sing. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22  “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

Living a sinful lifestyle, living out of the presence of the Lord, lack of study of God’s word, etc. are all part of the reasons the fullness of his power is never at work when ministering.

The music ministry is one that has lots of misdeeds. Could this be simply because Lucifer was a chief minstrel and he is bent of

You see, the concept of anointing is such that you cannot see an individual and just know he is anointed; there must be an ACT!

Consider some of the bible verses below:

1 John 2:20

Jesus said in Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim the good news.” The anointing moves when there is a movement.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

Similarly, the anointing can make one be able to pick up an instrument without prior knowledge, jumped on it, and start playing skilfully at first touch. This is the supernatural working of the anointing – empowering! However, the anointing will never substitute the place for skill. There is a time to practice or grow your skill and a time to place a demand on the anointing.

To further support the fusion of spirit and skill, in 1 Samuel 14-17 Saul was tormented by an evil spirit. He sought for a comely man, whom the Lord was with (spirit) and not just a skillful man – an ANOINTED-SKILLFUL Player.

Remember there could have been other more skillful players than David. How come just playing the harp was all that was required to drive the evil spirit away. David was not only playing skilfully, the anointing of God in him rode on the skill to dispel the spirit. There is so much connection between the anointing and skill – they are both gifts to man!

Come to think of it, have you ever experienced the power of God move in a worship atmosphere or with a song haphazardly rendered or full of inconsistency in beat, rhythm, and flat notes? The anointing is the power of God in a thing for a particular purpose.

Anointing empowers the way you deliver or use your skills. It is the power of God on the skill to carry out its work or purpose. Little wonder it is impossible for one who does not have the spirit of God no matter how gifted to function, sing, and minister in the church. The best that may happen is a temporal elation, but never causing a total change, transformation, or bringing down the power of God.

Rather than the anointing resting or falling on a skilled unqualified vessel, it will look for an unskilled spirit-filled individual and equip (skill) such an individual to carry out the specific assignment it was meant for. God is spirit and cannot be mocked.

Throughout the bible, God either used skillful or competent men and anointed them. In some cases, anointed men are equipped with skills for His use.

Whatever level you are today seek anointing more as you seek to improve your skills and watch the power of God increase as you sing or lead God’s people in music and songs. Never intensify one more than the other!
